Happy Birthday Jamian

A whole big fat year on the road.
A bittersweet celebration with so many ups and downs but one that we would never regret. Our ideal celebration would be to spend the day with everyone from home that we love, all you people. But we will squeeze a little bit more into our trip while we can, and the celebration will be all the greater when we return.
We flew from Luton airport to Split Croatia. With a brief nod and stamp at the border we headed into the city, giving thanks to Europe's easy border crossings and excellent food as we grabbed a slice of pizza. In the morning we headed out to explore, darting amongst hoardes of European and American Tourists to check out the beaches and old town of Split. A beautiful city we could see why so many people wanted to visit. We took a dip in the crystal blue waters, and headed out for some more Italian food. Turns out Croatian food is not such a big thing in Croatia.
We took a bus to Zagreb on the following morning, sliding effortlessly back into our routine without a car and spent a few days exploring. The culture of street art and outdoor cafe dining made our time here very enjoyable. We were particularly impressed with the actors dressed in traditional clothing wandering the city squares. The city atmosphere is certainly not reflective of its recent history, but we headed to the photography of war exhibition to find out more. What awaited us was more than we bargained for. A confronting experience, pictures of horrifying travesties occurring between 1991-1995 a reminder of the unhappy past for some citizens and a sobering reminder to us of what some countries still face.
And now we prepare for our next adventure to a farm 100km south of Zagreb, another WWOOF experience for 4 weeks. We feel it is a fitting place to celebrate our one year anniversary of travel and we are looking forward to slowing down and living a life close to nature for a while.
